The Third International Conference and Workshop on Transactive Energy brings together representatives of government, industry, utilities, vendor organizations, and academia to advance understanding and implementation of transactive energy. The core principle of transactive energy is to combine economic and control techniques, leading to improvements in power grid reliability and efficiency. It encompasses techniques for managing the centralized and local generation, flow, and consumption of power within an electrical system through the use of market-based methods, while maintaining grid reliability.

Speakers include:

  • Jorge Camacho, Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia
  • Paul De Martini, Caltech
  • David Forfia, Senior Director, Information Technology Services, ERCOT
  • James Jay Griffin, Hawaii Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawaii
  • Christopher Irwin, Smart Grid Standards and Interoperability Coordinator, US DOE
  • Travis Kavulla, Montana Public Service Commission
  • Curt Kirkeby, Senior Engineer, Avista Utilities
  • Rao Konidena, Principal Advisor, Policy Studies, Midcontinent Independent System Operator
  • James Mater, General Manager, Smart Grid Director, QualityLogic, Inc.
  • David Owens, Executive Vice President, Business Operations, Edison Electric Institute
  • Jason Salmi Klotz, Oregon Public Utility Commission
  • Heather Sanders, Principal Manager, Integrated Grid Strategy & Engagement, Southern California Edison
  • Robert Sherick, Manager, Power Systems Technologies, Southern California Edison
  • Chris Villarreal, Director of Policy, Minnesota Public Utilities Commission
  • Audrey Zibelman, Chair, New York Public Service Commission

Topics include:

  • Transactive System Valuation – How do we value or measure the impact of transactive systems in support of distributed energy resource integration?
  • Distributed Energy Resource Integration Challenges – What are the key challenges faced by utilities with increasing levels of distributed energy resources?
  • Grid Architecture – What are the current broad architectural concerns and considerations, and concepts that can facilitate migration to an electric power system supporting higher penetrations of distributed energy resources while maintaining reliability, resilience, and economic efficiency?
  • The GWAC Transactive Energy Decision Maker’s Checklist – What are key questions and considerations for executives, policy makers, regulators and other electric power system decision makers as they consider the investments in transactive energy systems?
  • International Plenary Panel – Panelists will describe the challenges facing electric power system modernization in their countries and discuss the potential role of transactive energy systems in addressing those challenges.
  • Regulatory and Policy Plenary Panel – Where is the future of regulation going? This is one of the central questions posed by NARUC President Travis Kavulla in his remarks last November. In this panel you will hear regulatory staff from around the United States and representatives from an RTO discuss this question, specifically how regulation impacts TE in their respective states and markets, regulatory and market challenges associated with implementing TE, and the future role of DER and TE in the distribution grid and bulk power market.
