Many benefits of the investments in smart grid technologies are being realized by energy providers, but making sure those benefits are also realized by consumers is critical. Technologies like the Internet of Things and advanced metering are becoming more prevalent as devices are connecting and communicating with each other and the grid. It’s important that the industry take an honest evaluation of end-user propensity to adopt and participate in a variety of smart grid enabled programs.

This discussion will explore a number of aspects of this evolution:

  • What cool things the smart grid has enabled that really offer value to energy users

  • What concerns exist that can be addressed by industry stakeholders

  • How prevalent grid modernization investments (from AMI to smart thermostat programs) are benefiting both grid operators and energy user

Larry Weis, CEO of Seattle City Light, will discuss the various grid modernization efforts completed and underway (including the recent full rollout of AMI), and how these efforts are allowing the utility to more effectively engage with customers. Following Larry’s remarks, Nathan Shannon with the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative will moderate a discussion with industry leaders at the front lines of leveraging grid modernization investments for higher consumer benefit.

During the meeting, all Smart Grid Northwest Members are welcome to join in voting on a number of official organizational matters, including the election of our new Board of Directors members.

After the meeting we will have a social event with drinks and appetizers to mix and mingle with various industry leaders. Many attendees of the next day’s Demand Response Symposium will also be joining the social reception.
